Blues Await Celtic Cup Draw

19th September 2003

Cardiff Blues are sitting out this weekend's Celtic Cup matches thanks to a first round bye but coach David Young and his team are eagerly awaiting the quarter-final draw that will take place live on S4C television at 7.05pm on Saturday.

"The lesson of the Celtic League matches so far," said Young, "is that nothing but the best will suffice. We put in a sub-standard performance in Glasgow and paid the price. We improved at home to Connacht but again lost our momentum for a while in the second half. Because of that we didn't complete the job and gain a bonus point. The standard is much higher than domestic club rugby and there is a great incentive to do well. We are being measured against the best and the Celtic League will get better and better."

The Blues have been in full training this week ahead of next week's trip to The Borders. Good news from the camp is that long-term injury victims are returning to action. International scrum-half Ryan Powell played in a Premier Division match on Wednesday and prop Darren Crompton is likely to play for Cardiff against Llandovery tomorrow. Wing Craig Morgan is also planning an imminent return to match fitness.

Young added:
"The return to action of all these players is a real positive for the Blues' squad and we can't wait to resume our fixtures next week."
